Pawnee City is a city and county seat of Pawnee County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 878 at the 2010 census. The city was incorporated in 1858, and is named after the P Shawnee Native Americans. It is located at 40°638N 96°913W (40.110603, 96.153553). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.21 square miles (3.13 km²), all land. The median household income was $23,587, and the median family income was $32,717. About 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.7% of those under the age of 16 and 27.2% of people over 65. The average household size was 2.07, with the average family size being 2.79. The racial makeup of the city was 99.13% White, 0.19% Native American,0.10% Asian, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1%. Of the 425 households, 19.1% had children under the Age of 18 living with them, 39.4% were married couples living together, and 50.6% were non-families. For every 100 females, there were 75.7 males, and for every 100 males there were 72.4 males.

History

Pawnee City was incorporated in 1858, and is named after the Pawnee Native Americans. By the 1880s, it was a railroad town at the junction of two railroad lines. It is located at the intersection of two U.S. railroads: the Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois railways, and the Pennsylvania & Wisconsin railroad lines. The city was named for the P Shawnee Native Americans, who lived in the area at the time of its incorporation. It was named after a Native American woman who died there in the late 19th century. It has a population of about 2,000 people, and was once the site of a major railroad station. The town is now home to the University of Wisconsin-Parksville, which was founded in 1857. It also has a branch of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which opened in 1859. The University of Wisconsin also has a chapter of the National Institution of Women and Science, which was founded in 1861. It was named for the women and girls who died in the 1940s and 1950s, and was named after the women and children who died in the 1850s and 1950s. The City was also known as "Pawee City" before it was incorporated as a city.

Geography

Pawnee City is located at 40°638N 96°913W (40.110603, 96.153553). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.21 square miles (3.13 km²), all land. The city is home to the Pawnee County Medical Examiner's Office, which conducts autopsies on the city's residents. The City of Pawnees is located on the banks of the Missouri River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to be named after a former president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who died in office in 1868. The town has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the town, the north and the east sides of the downtown area. It has an estimated population of 3,000. It was the site of the first recorded African-American settlement, in 1838, when the first African-Americans arrived in the city, and the first white settlement was made in 1841. The first black mayor of the community was elected in 1852, and he served from 1852 to 1855. The last mayor was elected again in 1855, and was re-elected in 1859, and then again in 1861, until his death in 1871. The current mayor is the son of a former mayor, who served from 1961 to 1971.
