Dell Rapids is a city in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 3,996 at the 2020 census. The city took its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, which were likened to the local rapids on the Big Sioux River. The Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroad built a railroad into the area, reaching Dell Rapids from Egan in 1881. Two large Sioux Quartzite quarries owned by LG Everist are operated via this rail line, which is now operated by LG's subsidiary, the D&I Railroad. The community celebrates its heritage with the annual "Quarry Days" in July, and in June, the city hosts "Cootie Days", where rides and games are set up and available in the city's park. History

Dell Rapids was originally named Dell City, but was renamed after the rapids of the Big Sioux River. The Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroad built a railroad into the area, reaching Dell Rapids from Egan in 1881. Two large Sioux Quartzite quarries owned by LG Everist are operated via this rail line, which is now operated by LG's subsidiary, the D&I Railroad. The city is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota, and was once part of the state of Minnesota. It is now part of South Dakotas, and is home to the South Dakota College of Mines and Technology, which was founded in the 1970s. The town has a population of about 2,000. It was once known as Dell City and was rebuilt out of Sioux quartzite, a common rock in the area. It has since been renamed Dell Rapids and is now a suburb of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dell Rapids is home to two separate school systems: the Dell Rapids public school system and St. Mary's, a private Catholic parochial school. The Public School District's mascot is the Quarriers, named after the large Sioux Quartzite rock quarries that are also in Dell Rapids. St.Mary's school also includes a junior high school, an elementary school, and a high school. It is the only Catholic school in the area. The school district is known as the Cardinals, and the Catholic school is called the Saints. It was founded in 1872 and is one of the oldest Catholic schools in the U.S. It has been in operation since 1872. The Catholic school was the first in the state to admit girls. It opened in 1883. It closed in 1891. It reopened in 1894 and has remained in operation ever since. It now has a total of 12 schools, including two high schools and two junior high schools. It also has a middle school and an elementary. The high school is located in the middle of the town. The public school district also has an elementary and middle school, as well as a middle and high school and a junior college. The district has a number of private schools as well, including a private daycare center and an after-school program for children with special needs. There are no public high schools or junior highs in the city of Dell Rapids, but there are several private Catholic schools. The town has a population of about 2,000.
