Sharpsburg is a town in Coweta County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Its population was 341 at the 2010 census. The community was named after Judge Elias Sharp, a local city commissioner. The town is located at 33°2022N 84°391W (33.339337, -84.650155) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sharpsburg has a total area of 0.60 square miles (1.55 km²), of which 0.01 km², or 0.66%, is water. Notable people include football player Keith Brooking, actor Josh Andrew Koenig, politician Lynn Westmoreland, and Olympic archery champion Janet Dykman. It has a public school system, with schools including East Coweta High School and Trinity Christian School. It also has a private school, Faith Lutheran Preschool, which is a preschool of Faith Lutheran Church in Sharpsberg. It was founded in 1871 and incorporated as a town by the Georgia General Assembly in 1872. The city is located in the eastern part of Georgia, near the city of Newnan. The county seat is Newnan, and the town of Turin is immediately to the southeast. Georgia State Route 16 runs through the southern part of Sharpssburg, leading west 10 miles (16 km) to Newnan and southeast 7 miles (11km) to Senoia. The state's largest city is Peachtree City.

History

The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Sharpsburg as a town in 1871. The community was named after Judge Elias Sharp, a local city commissioner. The town has a population of about 1,000 people. It is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, which runs through the center of the town.

Geography

Sharpsburg is located in eastern Coweta County at 33°2022N 84°391W (33.339337, -84.650155). The town of Turin is immediately to the southeast. Georgia State Route 16 runs through the southern part of Sharpsburg, leading west 10 miles (16 km) to Newnan, the county seat. According to the United States Census Bureau, Sharpsberg has a total area of 0.60 square miles (1.55 km²), of which 0.004square miles (0.01 km²) or 0.66% is water. The town has a population of 1,071 (1,072 in 2011). The city is located on the Georgia Turnpike, which runs from Atlanta to Phenix City, the state's largest city. The Turnpix City area is home to the Georgia Museum of Natural History and Science, which was founded in 1872. The museum is located at the center of the town and is open to the public. It has a collection of historic buildings, including the Georgia State Capitol and the Georgia National Guard Armory, which dates back to the 18th century. It is also the site of a historic blacksmith shop, which opened in the early 1900s. The city has a post office, which closed in the 1950s. It was re-opened in the 1960s, when the city was incorporated as a suburb of Newnan. The county seat is now located at Newnan and the town of Senoia is located 7 miles (11 km) southeast.
