Edwardsville is a city in and the county seat of Madison County, Illinois. As of the 2020 census, the population was 26,808. The city was named in honor of Ninian Edwards, then Governor of the Illinois Territory. It is a part of Southern Illinois and the Metro East region within Greater St. Louis. Edwardsville also serves as the headquarters for Prairie Farms Dairy one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the United States. It was heavily affected by the tornado outbreak of December 1011. An Amazon warehouse collapsed after being hit by an EF.3 tornado and six were killed and many others injured. The recognized Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It dates back to 1809 and has a mile-long visual landscape. More than 50 historic homes date from the middle 19th century to early 20th century. The present county courthouse, a square, four-story neoclassical structure of white marble that rises to six stories at the back section, was constructed from 1913 to 1915. The area has a lake and park, baseball field, and the Edwardsville Children's Museum in the former Rudolph D. Specht memorial schoolhouse. Former president Abraham Lincoln was in Edwardsville twice, as an attorney in the 1814 courthouse and a speaker outside the 1857 courthouse on Sept. 11, 1858. The Edwardsville School District also includes the villages of Glen Carbon, Hamel and Moro, as well as the township areas around them.

History

The first European-American settler was Thomas Kirkpatrick, who came in 1805. In 1890, St. Louis industrialist N.O. Nelson chose a tract of land just south of Edwardsville to build plumbing factories. He also built a model workers' cooperative village called Leclaire. Former president Abraham Lincoln was in Edwardsville twice, as an attorney in the 1814 courthouse and a speaker outside the 1857 courthouse on Sept. 11, 1858. The present county courthouse, a square, four-story neoclassical structure of white marble that rises to six stories at the back section, was constructed from 1913 to 1915. A 2010 issue of Family Circle magazine named Edwardsville third of their "Top 10 Best Towns for Families". Edwardsville was heavily affected by the tornado outbreak of December 10, 2011, when an EF2 tornado hit the town and killed six workers and injured many others. It was named one of the nation's safest towns to live in by the National Transportation Safety Board in 2012. The town is located on the Illinois River, which runs through the center of the city.

Geography and climate

According to the 2010 census, Edwardsville has an area of 20.165 square miles (52.23 km²) of which 97% is land and 3% is water. Edwardsville is located in the U.S. Climate Zone 4A per the International Energy Conservation Code. The city has an average monthly precipitation of 1.99 inches (51 mm) in January and 4.24 inches (108mm) in May. The average monthly temperature is 19 °F (7 °C) with a record high of 114 °C (46 °F) in July 2012. The county seat is located on the Missouri River, which runs through Edwardsville. The town has a population of 2,816. It is the only county seat in the state of Missouri that does not have a city of more than 1,000 people. The population of Edwardsville was 2,715 at the 2010 Census. The area has a temperature of 19 °C (7 °F) and a monthly average precipitation of 2.2 inches (50 mm) per year. The climate is considered to be in the climate zone 4A according to the IECC. It has a humid continental climate (Köppen "Cfa") with an average annual temperature of 7.7°F (4.4 °C). The city's average annual rainfall is 1.9 inches (47.7 mm) and the average monthly rainfall is 2.1 inches (48.7mm).

Demographics

As of the census of 2020, 26,808 people, 8,814 households, and 5,291 families resided in the city. There were 8,331 housing units at an average density of 600.6 per square mile (231.9/km²) The city's racial makeup was 87.70% White, 8.66% African American, 1.69% Asian, 0.28% Native American, 0,03% Pacific Islander, and 1.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population. The city had a median household income of $50,921, and the median family income was $65,555. About 5.0% of families and 8.6% of people were below the poverty line, including 7.3% of those under age 18 and 6.0%, of those age 65 or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.5 males. ForEvery 100 females age 18 or over, there are 83.3 males. The average household size was 2.44, andThe average family size was 1.99. Parks and recreation

MCT Trails: Madison County Transit has developed more than 125 miles (201 km) of scenic bikeways. SIUE Campus: Located on 2,660 acres (11 km²), the SIUE campus is one of the largest college campuses in the United States. Edwardsville Parks: Plummer Family Park, Winston Brown Sports Complex, Vadalabene Park, Brent Leh Dog Park, Springer Woods, Hoppe Park, Leon Corlew Splash Pad, RP Lumber Center, Leclaire Field, Joe Glik Park, City Park, Edwardsville Township Park, Le Claire Park, Lusk Memorial Park, and Rotary Park. The interpretive center displays native Illinois plants and animals and has education about the environment. The Edwardsville Arts Center, Wildey Theater, and Edwardsville Children's Museum are among the city's cultural attractions. The city's library system has more than 100,000 books and magazines, many of which are free to the public. The town has a history museum, the Madison County Historical Museum, and the Mannie Jackson Center for the Humanities. It also has several lakes, including LeClaire Lake, Dunlap Lake, and Tower Lake. It is home to the Illinois State Museum, which has a collection of more than 1,000 pieces of art, including the Illinois National Guard Museum. The local library system also has a large collection of books, magazines, and other items that are free for the public to purchase. It has a library system that is free and open to the general public.
